Turning something from an idea into a reality can make it seem smaller. It changes from unearthly to earthly. The imagination has no limits. The physical world does. The work exists in both.

- The Creative Act: A Way of Being, Rick Rubin.

ALLTAR is now an earthly creature, no longer sharing a bedroom with me.

Below I have compiled gallery shots, included works, a brief statement and some snaps from the opening on the 5th August.

Exhibition statement

ALLTAR, translating from the Irish language as the other side, afterlife or otherworld, is a solo exhibition by Irish artist and TAKT artist in residence summer 2023, Mary Martin. Her practice surrounds themes of metamorphosis, liminal realms and humanity’s disregard for the Anthropocene, which she contemplates and provides a way of tackling with the aid of indigenous story-telling. Through the perspective and case study of an imaginary species, whether living amongst us or taking shelter internally, Martin allows for an open space for the potential of empathy and inner reflection to prevail and heal.

Thank you!

Before delving into the opening night photos, I just wanted to acknowledge and say thank you to everyone who came out to my opening, both strangers and familiar faces, I am in a puddle of love. I was so grateful and delighted to have such a fabulous group to celebrate with and the support I’ve received over here has been nothing short of beautiful. Huge thank you to Antje & TAKT for facilitating this wonderful event and all of your help over the last few months and also thank you to Frank & Bernd for your magical duet. Thank you Izzy Monti for everything.

And finally thank you to everyone I’ve met along the path that has brought me here.
